 Threads That Colour Life.

This is the array of colourful threads outside a shop, I was attracted to while standing outside the Sankat Mochan Mandir after paying obeisance to the Lord “Hanuman”, in the City of Vishwanath, Devo-ke-Dev, Mahadev the Kashi. It is great wonder of Hinduism and many other religions too: worship the Lord from the core he would be coming to you tied in unspun the weakest threads. Despite His assurance, we the humans attach each colour with a specific Deity and wear the related colour thread to seek His blessings, Black colour thread is related to “Kaal Bhairon” a Manifestation of Lord Shiva, popularly known as spiritual “Kotwal” of the City of Kashi : Black thread empowered with “Mantras” is worn to ward off the bad spirits and negativity: Red thread is associated with “Durga” “Jai Mata Di”, “Saffron” colour thread is used to seek favours from Ram Bhakat “Hanuman”. Yellow colour thread is associated with Lord Krishna and “Radha Krishan” and also MAA “Baglamukhi” in Himachal Pradesh. Yellow thread with seven or nine knots is used to invite Suhagan Ladies meaning whose husband is alive for food as a mark of offering to Mata Chintapurni after one is blessed the way he prayed.

Every Hindu worship has a ritual when a thread unspun is tied to the right/left wrist of male/female as mark of being involved with the Lord worshipped. Many renowned surgeons invariably tie after prayer to the Lord Khamani also known as Mouli to hand that performs knife to relieve the people of pain and sufferings.

Still people tie a thread either to a tree or some other place marked for the purpose as a mark of request to the Deity to fulfil their wish and as soon as the wish is fulfilled they go and untie the thread along with an offering to the Deity as a mark of gratitude to the Deity. One of my closest friend did tie a thread to a stone sculptured window with a request to the Deity to bless him with a male child; after one year his wish materialised and then he came to us and we together went to the same place of worship of Deity and untied the thread tied earlier with an offering of gratitude.

Unspun threads are also used for symbolic offering of clothes “Angvastra” to Lord in all worships performed at home and also a piece of holy thread “Khamani” made of unspun yarn of yellow and dull red colour is placed on the head of a person when he has nothing to cover his read and he is required to do so as per the rituals and tradition. Even during marriage’s “Seven Rounds”- Sat Phere holy thread is used separately or along with Pink Duppatta – Headwear to tie the strongest knot for life between the Bride and the Groom.

Yagyopavit also known as Janue is another important thread in Hindu way of life: usually made of three white or cream stings strong ones signifying Brahma, Vishnu, Mahesh the Eternal Trinity also देवऋण, पितृऋण और ऋषिऋण meaning three debts a human being has to repay during his life time Debt of Lord, Parents and Teachers. This is worn at the time of Yagyopavit Sanskar one of the sixteen Sanskars of Hindu Way of Life, which as per scriptures is to be performed before one goes for studies, is for life time………..
